Kenya's distribution network runs at 11 and 33 kV with 415/240 V, 50 Hz low voltage. Public buyers include Kenya Power, the rural electrification agency, KenGen and KETRACO. Many distribution-transformer tenders are reserved for local manufacturers, while conductors and cables are often bought ex-stock from local suppliers.

Who buys, and what
| Local transformer manufacturers | Tenders marked 'Local Manufacturers Only' require review of local eligibility; any imported component or OEM scope must be checked against the tender and local manufacturer's requirements |
|---|---|
| Cable and conductor stockists | Ex-stock tenders for conductors, cables and stay wire are won by stockists who import |
| Electrical contractors | Substation, RMU and MV works for Kenya Power, KenGen and private developers |
Tender requirements to confirm with the proposed supplier
| Local-manufacturer tenders | Confirm bidder eligibility, local-manufacturing conditions and whether any imported component scope is permitted |
|---|---|
| Ex-stock delivery | Confirm inventory, required delivery date, quantities and drum lengths against the tender BOQ |
| Type-test reports and KEBS documents | Confirm report coverage for the proposed design and the documents required by the PVoC body |
Import conformity
- Imports must carry a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) issued under the KEBS Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme before shipment, unless the goods are exempted, prohibited or restricted.
- KEBS has contracted nine PVoC inspection companies for 2026 to 2029. The certification route (A, B or C) depends on the inspection company's risk assessment; test reports must come from a recognised laboratory.
- PVoC Manual version 15 (19 February 2026) adds a requirement for exporters to submit a Free Sale certificate before the CoC is issued.
- Consignments that arrive without a CoC are subject to destination inspection, with a fee reported at 5% of the approved customs value.
